A deck is the one part of the house that lives outdoors all year. Ohio gives it freeze, thaw, sun and damp in rotation, which is why decks fail from the footings and the fasteners long before the boards wear out.
We build new decks, stairs and railings, and we stain them — new or existing. On sloping ground, which is most of this county, that usually means more than one level.
Why it is worth doing
Building or refinishing a deck offers several benefits
- 01Usable outdoor room. A deck extends the living space of the house for most of the year without the cost of an addition.
- 02Protection of the structure. Stain and sealer keep water out of the grain. A deck that is finished on schedule lasts years longer than one that is not.
- 03Safer stairs and rails. Loose rails and rotten stringers are the most common problems we are called out to, and the ones most likely to hurt somebody.

Stain goes on after the boards have had time to dry. Staining wet lumber is the single most common reason a brand-new deck looks blotchy a season later, and it cannot be fixed without stripping it back.
